“You’ll have to budget better from now on.”
But that wasn’t all.
We had one car — his Cadillac.
If I needed groceries, I planned shopping trips around his meetings.
If I wanted to see a friend, I checked his calendar first.
It became automatic after a while.
One afternoon, I asked if I could drive myself to a prenatal appointment.
He looked genuinely surprised.
“Why?” he asked.
“I’ll take you.”
I didn’t say anything after that.
Arguments with Blaine didn’t sound like arguments.
They didn’t involve raised voices or slammed doors; they just ended with statements.
Facts I couldn’t argue against.
