I stared at the ceiling so I would not cry in front of everyone.
The Unexpected Knock
About an hour into the night, the doorbell rang.
Jake stood up, annoyed, assuming it was food delivery.
When he opened the door, he froze.
It was not the delivery driver.
It was his mother, Maria.
She took in the room in seconds. The drinks. The noise. The friends. Me on the couch in a brace. The baby monitor.

Then she looked directly at Jake.
“You’re coming with me,” she said calmly. “Now.”
The room went silent.
