She walked straight to the nursery wing, reclaiming what had never stopped being hers.
When Jonathan followed her to the driveway, desperation stripping away his polish, she paused only once.
“You told me I’d leave with nothing,” she said quietly.
She looked at her sons, safe, breathing, alive.
“You were wrong.”
As the gates closed behind her, Rebecca didn’t feel triumphant.
