He nodded and forced a smile. “Yeah, of course, I’m fine,” he reassured me. “It’s our anniversary, and I couldn’t be happier.”

I smiled at his response and turned my attention to the menu. Even though I had memorized it from all our visits, I still liked to glance over it for nostalgia’s sake.

When I finally looked up, I was met with the biggest surprise of my life.

Brian was down on one knee, and behind him, a group of musicians played soft, romantic melodies on their violins.

“Jane, my love, we’ve spent six wonderful years together, and I know without a doubt that I want to spend forever with you,” Brian said earnestly. “Would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
