The murmurs of the crowd began to fade as onlookers noticed the child touching the “dangerous” dog. A volunteer rushed over, face pale. “Sweetheart, step back! He’s unpredictable. He isn’t ready for adoption.”
“He’s not dangerous,” Emma said, her small voice steady. “He’s just scared.”
As the volunteer reached for Emma, Shadow let out a low, protective rumble. It was not aggression, but caution—a warning. He stepped closer, pressing his muzzle into her palm, an act of trust that professional trainers hadn’t seen in nearly a year. Emma’s mind wandered back to that night—the rain pouring endlessly, the headlights of a police cruiser signaling a permanent shift in her life. She remembered Captain Reyes kneeling to her height, his voice trembling as he told her that her father, Officer Daniel Ward, would not be coming home. Behind him, Shadow had stood, limping and soaked, eyes hollow with a guilt no animal should bear. He had fought to save Daniel, barely surviving himself.
