The room fell silent. Even the other dogs seemed to pause as Emma unfolded the letter. Captain Reyes, standing at the back, recognized the handwriting immediately: Daniel Ward’s precise, disciplined script. Emma took a trembling breath and read her father’s final words aloud.
“My dearest Emma,” she began, voice quivering. “If you are reading this, it means I am not coming home. I know you are brave and strong. But Shadow… he will be lost without guidance. He has spent his life protecting me, and if he fails, he will blame himself. Take care of each other. You are all he has left, and he is all you have. Guard each other’s hearts.”
By the time she finished, even the most hardened ranchers and skeptical bidders were looking down at the floor. Shadow was no longer a “broken” number on a cage—he was a living testament to a fallen officer. The auctioneer did not seek further bids. He looked at Captain Reyes, who nodded solemnly.
