I turned to Carolyn with a dawning realization. “Is it possible… that your parents adopted your daughter?”
Carolyn’s face went pale again.
She sank into a nearby chair, her wedding dress pooling around her like spilled milk.
“My parents wanted to keep her,” she whispered, staring at her hands. “When I told them I was pregnant, they begged me to let them raise her. But I refused.
I thought giving her up to strangers would be a fresh start for everyone.”
“What happened then?” I asked gently.
“I left the country after the birth. Traveled for years, trying to outrun my guilt. My parents and I stopped speaking.
They never forgave me for giving away their grandchild.”
