“I didn’t know about him,” he said quickly. “Thirteen years ago, before I met you, I was seeing someone named Laura.
It wasn’t serious. We dated only for a few months. We broke up, and I moved out of state for work.
I didn’t hear from her again.”
My mouth was dry. “And she never told you?”
“She said she didn’t want to ‘complicate things,’ thought she could handle it on her own. But a couple of months ago, she found me on Facebook.
She said she was sick, suffering from a form of autoimmune disease, and could no longer work full-time. And she told me about Caleb.”
“Caleb,” I repeated.
He nodded. “That’s his name.”
“And you just believed her?”
“I asked for proof,” he said quickly.
